Thank you, Chinese pop! Listening to Taiwan singer-songwriter LaLa right now.
Oooh. I just Googled her! Apparently she's the Taiwan American Idol, or something. She's a former nurse who won the national singing contest "One Million Star" last year. Right now, I'm listening to "Riding a White Horse," or "身騎白馬," which she wrote and apparently made her an instant celebrity in Taiwan. Her voice is pretty lovely, and something about her voice in song is reminiscent of (what I think of as) Chinese opera. A lot of trills, dips and dainty high notes. Apparently she's been compared to Obama...
As all of you know, China (and more specifically, Taiwan) is a big part of my heritage. My mother was born in China but raised in Taipei, Taiwan. (FYI, my father was born in Philadelphia but raised in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. So kind of the same.) All of my mother's immediate family still resides in Taipei: my grandparents, my aunt, my uncle, their children and their children's children. I'm going to Taipei this summer for seven full weeks (from May 28-July 15) to live with them, become familiar with their Taiwan lifestyle and finally learn to speak some Mandarin.
