Today is the first workday/schoolday I've experienced on this visit. So many ties and knee-length skirts, I might as well be at an Upper East Side middle school! Last Thursday was a holiday (sticky rice holiday) and Friday was a holiday too because Thursday was a holiday and people wanted long weekends. And then, of course, there was the weekend. And the post office is closed on both Saturday and Sunday, unlike in the U.S. So I'm in Starbucks right now and the young ladies who have been sitting near me and studying (read: texting) aren't here today. Probably at school.
Funny. Starbucks in my Chinese textbook.

As all of you know, China (and more specifically, Taiwan) is a big part of my heritage. My mother was born in China but raised in Taipei, Taiwan. (FYI, my father was born in Philadelphia but raised in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. So kind of the same.) All of my mother's immediate family still resides in Taipei: my grandparents, my aunt, my uncle, their children and their children's children. I'm going to Taipei this summer for seven full weeks (from May 28-July 15) to live with them, become familiar with their Taiwan lifestyle and finally learn to speak some Mandarin.
