I'm not sure what these are called in English. We certainly don't have them in America, so they might not even have an English name. But my Taiwanese buddy Charlene, a tiny girl with long eyelashes who gets up at 6am every morning to go to yoga in Taipei City, treated me to TWO today. (Enter my mother, telling me not to eat too much sugar in form of twenty-minute monologue.) One with cream filling, one with red bean filling. The outside is soft and bready. They're made hot and in front of your eyes at a sidewalk stand. The yellow custard-looking concoction is the cream filling, and the chunky brown triangles to the right are the red bean filling. You can also see squares of chocolate, which constitute the chocolate filling. Next time I definitely want to try chocolate.
As all of you know, China (and more specifically, Taiwan) is a big part of my heritage. My mother was born in China but raised in Taipei, Taiwan. (FYI, my father was born in Philadelphia but raised in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. So kind of the same.) All of my mother's immediate family still resides in Taipei: my grandparents, my aunt, my uncle, their children and their children's children. I'm going to Taipei this summer for seven full weeks (from May 28-July 15) to live with them, become familiar with their Taiwan lifestyle and finally learn to speak some Mandarin.
