A little video portrait of Ximen Station at night. Girls dancing to Rihanna (very strange way to advertise a cell phone), Coldstone scoopers singing* and singer-songwriters playing in the plaza.
*Yeah, I went to Coldstone. I know it's not a local Taiwanese treat or anything. Sue me. I was craving it and I wanted to see if they would sing if I tipped them, just like the U.S. They do sing! Unfortunately, I didn't capture much of it. The clip is only five seconds long. I fumbled with my camera because I was cracking up at their adorable accents. The girl who prepared my Cake Batter Like It asked me in English, "Do you study in Taipei?" And her coworkers burst out laughing at her pronunciation and teased her, "Stoo-dee, stoo-dee, doo yoo stoo-dee." She laughed too and I told her in Chinese, Your English is very good. Don't worry.**

As all of you know, China (and more specifically, Taiwan) is a big part of my heritage. My mother was born in China but raised in Taipei, Taiwan. (FYI, my father was born in Philadelphia but raised in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. So kind of the same.) All of my mother's immediate family still resides in Taipei: my grandparents, my aunt, my uncle, their children and their children's children. I'm going to Taipei this summer for seven full weeks (from May 28-July 15) to live with them, become familiar with their Taiwan lifestyle and finally learn to speak some Mandarin.
